URANS assessment of ship extreme roll event in irregular stern quartering sea

چکیده

Abstract In this study, the extreme roll events of a free-running ONR Tumblehome model in stern quartering seas are predicted by an unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (URANS) solver coupled with dynamic overset grid approach. The validation study is first performed for prediction ship amplitude regular waves, indicating satisfactory agreement average difference less than 3% between simulation and experimental results. URANS approach then applied to assessment as sailing irregular seas. free 6 degrees freedom (DOF) motions course-keeping control. It concluded that ship’s yaw motion plays important role occurrence sea. A rapid increase angle observed roll, even leading capsizing.

Ship roll damping control

The technical feasibility of roll motion control devices has been amply demonstrated for over 100 years. Performance, however, can still fall short of expectations because of difficulties associated with control system designs, which have proven to be far from trivial due to fundamental performance limitations and large variations of the spectral characteristics of wave-induced roll motion. Thi...

The technical feasibility of roll motion control devices has been amply demonstrated for over 100 years. Performance, however, can still fall short of expectations because of deficiencies in control system designs, which have proven to be far from trivial due to fundamental performance limitations. Steady free-surface flow at the stern of a ship

New solutions for steady two-dimensional free-surface flow past a curved plate are considered here. They can be interpreted as approximations to the flow locally at the stern of a ship. Weakly nonlinear solutions are derived analytically and nonlinear solutions are computed by boundary integral equation methods. Analysis in the phase plane provides a way to determine the geometries of hulls tha...

Extreme Waves and Ship Design

Recent research has demonstrated that extreme waves, waves with crest to trough heights of 20 to 30 meters, occur more frequently than previously thought. Also, over the past several decades, a surprising number of large commercial vessels have been lost in incidents involving extreme waves. Many of the victims were bulk carriers. Current design criteria generally consider significant wave heig...

Sudden cardiac event on a sea-going ship and recognition of a work-related accident.

OBJECTIVES. Evaluation of the effect of selected work environment factors on a sea-going ship on the occurrence of a sudden cardiac event and its recognition as a work-related accident. BACKGROUND. Sudden cardiac events, myocardial infarction in particular, among crews of seagoing ships are the most frequent reasons for fatal morbid events. In more than 20% of such cases, conditions and organiz...
